EH personnel have found medications and sharps mixed together at HHW collections. This is a potential HEALTH RISK for the personnel handling such materials. Various blood borne diseases can be transmitted through used sharps.
To protect our EH personnel and help create a safe environment please take extra caution when preparing your sharps for disposal.
To be accepted at a HHW collection all sharps MUST be placed in “official” or suitable “unofficial” container that resists puncturing or spillage. See flyer. Containers should be a hard/ridged plastic material, have a sealed lid and be properly labeled.
Patrons should inform EH personnel when they possess sharps for disposal so the appropriate care can be used.
Sharps should NOT be mixed in with other materials.
Suitable Unofficial Containers – liquid laundry detergent bottles & plastic coffee containers.
Containers must have sealed lids.
Unsuitable Containers – milk jugs, plastic juice containers, plastic bags, cardboard boxes.

Florescent lights are very fragile and should be handled with care. These bulbs can easily break and become a hazard to yourself and EH personnel.
To be accepted at a HHW collection florescent lights should be packaged individually so as to allow EH personnel to transfer individual lights to waste hauler disposal containers.
Florescent lights should NOT be wrapped or tapped together. This can easily break the lights (especially the long fluorescent tubes) causing a risk to yourself and EH personnel.
Only oil based paint, stains, mineral spirits and sealers are accepted during this event.
Please make sure all lids are adequately sealed and that the containers are in good condition.

Latex based paint is NOT accepted.
Latex paint can be disposed of through a routine garbage collection, however it must be in a solidified state.
To solidify: place kitty litter, vermiculite or saw dust into the paint can and leave it out to dry.

DO NOT place items that contain mercury in with other material.
A leakage of a mercury containing device could contaminate other material posing a health risk to EH personnel.

Mercury thermometers are fragile and require careful handling.
Mercury thermometers and mercury containing devices MUST be placed in a zip lock bag.
Gasoline MUST be placed in OSHA or Michigan Department of Transportation approved containers.
Workers will NOT accept gasoline in unapproved containers.
Containers will NOT be returned.
Household cleaners are accepted at the collection.
All products must be in properly labeled containers and in adequate condition.
Fire extinguishers and 1 lb propane tanks are accepted.
Propane tanks larger then 1 pound are NOT accepted.
Lighter fuel or lamp oil is also accepted.
Please note: that combustible materials must be placed in undamaged/robust containers and be properly labeled.
